Position: Director Location: Mumbai

The Organization: Slum Rehabilitation Society is a not-for-profit organisation engaged in slum rehabilitation and welfare activities for more than 40 years. It endeavours to provide free housing and quality living to urban poor. SRS is engaged in organising, planning and executing housing projects through self-development or under different Government schemes. It also operates health clinics, community health activities, neighbourhood library, Balwadi, day care centre for children, and self help groups in slum communities in different parts of the city of Mumbai.
 

Core Responsibilities

 

The Director will be primarily responsible for leading the organisation, guiding staff, mediating with slum residents, executing projects and raising funds. More specifically:

  • Manage and speed up the housing projects at hand
  • Explore and take up new housing projects for the slum dwellers
  • Streamline ongoing community activities on health care, education, livelihood for efficient, effective and sustainable programs.
  • Conceive, develop, plan and execute new programme of intervention
  • Comply with all regulatory requirements
  • Create opportunities to forge strategic partnerships.
  • Spearhead fundraising activities.
  • Lead the teams and building cross functionality among teams.
  • Support the Managing Committee of the Society.
  • Reporting to Chairman

 

Core Competencies for Director

 

  •  Leadership - Provide strong and dynamic overall leadership at SRS, working to build consensus around key decisions among slum dwellers and other key stakeholders for SRS housing schemes
  • Strategic direction and implementation - Envisioning an organizational strategy for the development and growth of the SRS housing activities at Mumbai and in other cities
  • Operational Supervision - Provide leadership and apply managerial and technical skills to measure and improve efficiency and effectiveness in housing and welfare activities including hands-on supervision, motivation, and mentoring of staff as well as fiscal monitoring.
  • Communication - In consultation with the Chair of the Board, act as the principal spokesperson and public face of SRS, communicating complex issues both verbally and in writing to diverse audiences, and building strong relationships with key stakeholders including slum dwellers, policymakers, organizational partners, media outlets, and funders to promote SRS objectives and advance the cause of slum dwellers
  • Compliance –In consultation with the Chair, fulfil all necessary legal and regulatory requirements under BPTA, Income Tax, FCRA, SRA and other contractual obligations

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experiences

 

  • Experienced professional with MSW or background in social science, social marketing, journalism, business management, architecture or civil engineering
  • Minimum 5 years of full time work experience in working with urban poor, preferably in the field of low cost housing. At least two years in heading a large project, strategic business unit or an organisation will be required.
  • Extensive experience of working with donor partnerships with companies, funding agencies and high net worth individuals in international, regional and sub-regional levels.
  • Experience of planning, recruiting and mentoring teams
  • Good financial and numerical skills.
  • Strong negotiation, advocacy and communication â€?both written and verbal â€?including excellent presentation skills in English.
  • Extensive working experience in slum communities, preferably in Mumbai.
  • A good track record of developing productive relationships with key government officials and slum community leaders.
  • Strong attention to detail and deadlines, and the ability to balance multiple, complex, competing and demanding responsibilities.

 

Travel: Limited travel outside Mumbai.

 

Contract: 3 year renewable contract

  

Compensation: Commensurate with qualifications and experience in the operating NGOs.

 

Note: The Management of SRS may, on its sole discretion, not fill the position or appoint a person at a lower grade as Administrator or Programme Manager as it may deem appropriate, in case the suitable candidate not found for the above position,
